Sun., July 24 - Cruise the Danube River in Austria's scenic Wachau Valley, a UNESCO treasure, to enjoy verdant vineyards, castles and quaint villages. Visit glorious Melk with its famed monastery and lovely medieval Durnstein with its castle ruin where Richard the Lionhearted was imprisoned. Enjoy winding stone byways, flowers galore and apricot specialties under the blue tower. On to Budapest, Hungary for a 2 night stay.
Mon., July 25 - Explore Buda and Pest with a sightseeing tour to glorious Heroes Square, dramatic Castle Hill and the utterly romantic Fisherman's Bastion. Visit the Old Town to enjoy the cafes, quaint shops and ancient iron market with mounds of paprika and Hungarian pastries. View the city from another angle on a stunning Danube River cruise. Feast on Hungarian delights!
Tues. July 26 – Gorgeous scenery as we drive across Slovakia under the fabled High Tatras to Pieniny National Park. View village life a hundred years ago in a traditional log home that is now the Zdiar Museum. Celebrate Goral culture in a quaint mountain inn with local food and music. 1 night Zdiar, northeastern Slovakia
Wed., July 27 - Visit the famed Cerveny Klastor (Red Cloister) Museum and learn about mad monk Cyprian who healed locals with herbal remedies and flew with wings of wax from Tatra peaks. Enjoy an exciting raft ride in the incredibly scenic gorge on the Dunajec River between Slovakia and Poland. Magical Krakow beckons. Board a mini-train to glimpse Old Town sights from Wawel Castle to the Jewish Quarter. Stroll the central square and see an amazing selection of Polish crafts in the historic Cloth Hall as the notes from the famed trumpeter float down on the hour. Enjoy the flower market and the cafes. Thurs., July 28 – Enjoy Krakow’s museums, cafes and glorious churches or take optional tours to the famed Weiliczka Royal Salt Mine, a UNESCO Treasure, and/or Auschwitz, Nazi death camp. (Dinner on your own, in our hotel or in town.)
Fri., July 29 – Journey to the Czech Republic, folklore capital Straznice in Moravia. Enjoy Straznice Castle and its outstanding display of art and musical instruments. Stroll through the Outdoor Museum of Eastern Moravian villages. Sample local delights spiced with haunting Moravian violin & cymbal music. 2 nights Straznice, Czech Republic
Sat., July 30 – Visit a renowned batik workshop and purchase unusual souvenirs. Tour grand Milotice Castle with its unusual greenery covered walkways and intimate living quarters. We’ll end in a private wine cellar tasting just for us and have dinner in the vineyard. Fun to watch the wine come up through a crystal wine pipe, even better is comparing the vintages. Sample local bread and traditional Moravian kolacky, yummy curd cheese buns.
Sun., July 31 - Cross the White Carpathians into Slovakia to tour Schaubmarov Mlyn, an ancient mill now a museum of Slovak naïve folk art and a fascinating glimpse of the wooden works of the oldest mill in Slovakia. Marvel at the view from Bratislava Castle, then a guided tour of Bratislava’s Old Town. Free time to shop for souvenirs from Modra ceramics to crystal to straw dolls or visit charming cafés.
